Updated Stanley Cup Playoff Betting Odds As Of April 24th, 2012

It hasn’t been good to be on top of the charts to win the Stanley Cup so far.

The Pittsburgh Penguins started out as favorites to win the championship, were bounced from the playoffs in just the first round. The Vancouver Canucks were second-favorites to win the cup, but were eliminated over the weekend 3-1 by the Los Angeles Kings.

The New York Rangers were briefly favored to win the cup last week, and now go into a Game Seven with the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night.

One-by-one, underdogs are picking off the top teams, and the odds have been shuffling all the while.

Now, Bovada’s NHL Stanley Cup Futures is favoring the St. Louis Blues to hoist the cup with 4/1 odds. St. Louis is the fourth new team to be favored since odds were first announced at the start of the playoffs.

Bovada has Philadelphia and Nashville tied for second with 5/1 odds. The Predators exorcised some major demons in the first round, beating the Detroit Red Wings and now face the winner of Phoenix-Chicago.

Bettors have been spreading the money around on a handful of teams because of the parody, says MGM Mirage’s Jeff Stoneback.

“It’s spread all over,” he said. “Nobody has jumped out on one team.”

The Blues missed the playoffs last year, and were huge underdogs to win the championship when lines were first introduced. They hadn’t won a playoff series in a decade – at least not until breezing past San Jose in the first round this year.

They will face the upstart Kings, who dominated the top-seeded Canucks in the opening round. It’s the only second-round match that has been completely set so far, giving oddsmakers a clearer view for who they chose to win the cup. Both teams were first and second in fewest goals allowed during the regular season. St. Louis goalie Brian Elliot had a league-leading 1.56 goals against average, followed by Los Angeles’ Jonathan Quick, who was second with 1.95. The Kings won three of four during the year, but two of the four contests ended 1-0.
