New Jersey Devils vs. Philadelphia Flyers Betting Lines For May 1, 2012

It’s pretty clear who Martin Brodeur is going to keep his eye on this series, if it wasn’t apparent already. James van Riemsdyk annoyed the New Jersey Devils goaltender all night Sunday and wore him down in Philadelphia’s 4-3 overtime win in Game One.

Despite recovering from a broken foot, Riemsdyk, a former second overall selection, used his big frame to bully Brodeur all night and it paid off in the extra period. He had a goal himself, but made his most important play in when shielded teammate Danny Briere’s game winner in overtime.

“We have to do a better job of boxing out in front of Marty,” New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer told the Associated Press. “We also have to do a better job of limiting the time they spend on our end of the ice. We need to clear the puck out and keep the puck on the other end.”

That didn’t happen much in Game One. Instead, it was Brodeur who had to get physical with him and try to wear him down.

“I try to stay positive throughout all the bumps in the road,” said van Riemsdyk. “I got a great opportunity last night and I was able to take advantage of it. I hope to continue that.”

So does Philadelphia, who has been forced to play without him most of the year. The forward was in and out of the lineup this year battling injuries, missing 39 games. Still he scored 11 goals and 13 assists in half a season. He missed 19 games before finally returning to the playoffs against Pittsburgh.

“The layoff served him well,” head coach Peter Laviolette told the AP. “It gave him an opportunity to practice at a high level and get conditioned and battle for pucks and use his speed and that translated to the game.”

The Flyers are favored by 1 1/2 goals in tonight’s Game Two, according to Bovada, with a -150 moneyline.

But this isn’t unfamiliar territory for the Devils. They were down 3-2 to the Florida Panthers in the first round and won the series. Although they would prefer not having to rebound every series, experience helps.

“Just losing the first game makes it a little more important,” Brodeur said. “We just have to play our game. We have to keep the game as simple as possible. We played right into their hands with their speed and physicality. We have to get the puck out of our zone as quickly as possible. We have to try to minimize our mistakes.”
