Well that was disappointing.
On the opening night of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, two of the most heavily favored teams to win the championship tanked in Game One.
The Vancouver Canucks, favorites in the west, surrendered two goals to the Los Angeles Kings in the third period and lost 4-2.
It was worse for the Pittsburgh Penguins, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime in a game they were favored by Bovada to win. After leading 3-0 in the first period, the Penguins surrendered two goals to Philadelphia’s Danny Briere, before allowing Jakub Voracek’s score in OT.
Despite only capturing the fourth seed in the NHL Eastern Conference Playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins were labeled as favorites to win the Stanley Cup, according to Bovada’s NHL Futures Betting Odds.
They took a big step backwards Wednesday night. And now, Pittsburgh is just 2-5 against Philadelphia after blowing three leads in the last three meetings, and will surely see their odds for the Stanley Cup tank pretty soon.
The Flyers are dangerous because of their ability to carve out wins from nothing. Wednesday night was the 52nd time in 56 games they trailed midway through the first period. They are also 3-1 in overtime in the playoffs against the Penguins.
“They came back, which is what they’ve done,” Pittsburgh coach Dan Byslma told the Associated Press. “They’re a good team. They don’t stop. The second half of the game, we didn’t get to our game and where we needed to play as much as we needed to and they got back in it.”
Of the Wednesday’s three opening games, only the Nashville Predators won at home.
